On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
o Explain the core concepts associated with health, mental health and illness.
o Discuss the core values and professional competencies associated with mental health nursing practice.
o Identify the policy and legislative frameworks underpinning mental health
services and nursing practice
o Explain how the experience of mental illness may impact on the individual and their family/carers.
o Discuss how mental health nurses can assess, respond and intervene to support
people experiencing mental health issues and to support their families and carers.
o Summarize the main patient safety issues which may impact on people with mental health issues.
o Demonstrate application of fundamental nursing skills necessary to support practice at stage 1 level.
