This module will introduce the student to a variety of ethnographic approaches through examination and analysis of a variety of ethnographic texts that will be pre-designated by the module coordinator. The modulew will give an overview of field theory and methodology in Ethnomusicology.
Students will be expected to critically assess strategies for successful fieldwork in Ethnomusicology, and discuss and critically evaluate contemporary descriptions of fieldwork in Ehnomusicology in full-length ethnographic texts, to be designated by the module coordinator

Learning Outcomes:

The student should have an overview of field theory and methodology in Ethnomusicology, and be able to critically assess strategies for successful fieldwork .
The student should be able to discuss and critically evaluate contemporary descriptions of fieldwork.

Indicative Module Content:

The student will critically evaluate what the author is looking for in his/her study of music.
Discuss and evaluate where the balance lies between fieldwork and laboratory research
Assess how the author(s) of specified monographs conceptualise music.
Assess how the author(s) of specified monographs document his/her research.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Seminars will be held in person, and for each seminar a selection of readings will be assigned which will focus on contemporary scholarship in fieldwork and ethnography. These readings should be undertaken critically, trying to go beyond the information/facts presented in the texts to an analysis of the assumptions behind the writings.
Students will be expected to participate actively in discussions of the works we read, and to partpcipate actively in discussions of the reading assigned, and to come to class having prepared the relevant materials.
