The aim of this module is to provide students with an introduction to the considerations around commercial development of precision medicine products and services. The module will help students understand the concepts, frameworks and techniques involved in bringing scientific discoveries to the market. The module will outline the regulatory environment for precision medicine products and how regulatory assessments of products are undertaken. The module will explore the potential for innovation arising from scientific discoveries using basic business concepts, identify examples of value creation in precision medicine and explain how to capture and create value. The module will illustrate the steps involved in the development of a business plan and the students will write and present a business plan based on a precision medicine product or service. The course material will be supported using case studies from researchers within the precision medicine space that have founded UCD spinout companies to commercialise their research.

2. Explain how value is created and captured during the commercialisation process
3. Describe the process of identification and capture of IP
4. Apply the basics of product positioning and understanding of the competitor environment
5. Execute the basic steps required for the development of a business plan
6. Write and present a business plan
