This module is for graduate research students in the School of Medicine. PhD students should be in Stage 1 of the programme. The module is designed to enable graduate research students to integrate the scientific and translational aspects of their research, to develop their critical thinking and analysis skills and to enhance their scientific communication skills.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
Demonstrate that they are knowledgeable about the clinical relevance and potential impact of their translational research, critically evaluate and discuss work described in international research journals with their peers, reflect on the impact of current research developments on their own field of research and present their own research to their peers.

Indicative Module Content:

Topics covered will be the requirements of the PhD stage transfer assessment in the School of Medicine and how to demonstrate that you have reached them. Students will attend journal clubs to learn about current developments in their own field and/or other relevant translational research. Students will learn how best to present their own research and handle questions from peers. Students will reflect on their learning throughout the module.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Students will attend interactive workshops where they will contribute to discussions and ask questions. They will attend and participate in research seminars and journal clubs. they will work in groups to reflect on and discuss their learning throughout the module.

Learning Requirements:

Students registering for this module need to be registered for a graduate research degree in the School of Medicine, PhD students must be in Stage 1 of the doctoral programme.
