The module aims to foster knowledge and competence in the ethical practice of psychotherapy including consideration of current mental health policy developments. The module will inform the student of the implications of ethics in clinical practice i.e. professional representation and misrepresentation, record keeping and access to records, Data Protection and Freedom of Information legislation, informed consent, confidentiality and breach of confidentiality, codes of practice and professional ethical guidelines. Professional liaising and referral with other mental health providers, including report and letter writing will be focussed on. The module will instruct the student on the necessity of post training supervision and maintenance of professional development.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Acquire the necessary information and skills to support distressed clients and manage personal and professional boundaries. 2. Examine the professional, ethical and legal context of practice and learn ways of auditing the same. 3. Demonstrate an awareness of the need for ongoing CPD and maintenance of professional standards. 4. Take responsibility for developing new initiatives for emerging professional issues and situations.
