The first part of this course focuses on phonetics, starting with articulatory phonetics and moving on to acoustic phonetics. Students are introduced to the instrumental analysis of speech, with a broad focus on different varieties of English.
The second part of the course focuses on the patterning of speech sounds in language exploring a range of cross-linguistic data.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:
-describe, classify and transcribe speech sounds
-analyse recorded and transcribed speech, interpret data and process results
-interpret acoustic data from theoretical perspectives
-identify patterns in speech data and analyse them within particular theoretical frameworks
-demonstrate an understanding of current issues in phonological theory

Structure of sound inventories; Phonetic features
Distribution of sounds; Phonological patterning/alternations
Syllables, syllable structure
