This module is dedicated to specialist research in Linguistics. You are requested to complete a research project under the supervision of a lecturer whose expertise aligns with the selected topic.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

Learn to carry out research including the following:
- identify research question(s)
- identify the relevant background literature
- learn about and apply research methods, frameworks etc.
- collect data/build a corpus and analyse relevant material
- present research findings

Indicative Module Content:

During Autumn, students who have meet the criteria mentioned in the module descriptor can propose a research project in consultation with a staff member based on their own interests.

Research questions linked to any Linguistics modules can be suggested as a potential topic (Sociolinguistics, Corpus Linguistics, Syntax, World Englishes, etc.)

If the project can be facilitated by one of the staff members, that staff member will then supervise the development of the project (literature review, methodology, results, discussion, etc.) during the Spring trimester.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Students will discuss activities with their project supervisor, they will then carry them out and receive oral and written feedback from their supervisor.

Requirements, Exclusions and Recommendations
Learning Requirements:

To be able to register to this module:
- Students must propose a project to a potential supervisor towards the end of the Autumn trimester and gain approval before they can be properly registered.
- Students wishing to register for this module are required to have a minimum Stage 2 GPA of 3.08.
- They also need to have a minimum of a B+ in a Stage 2 module that represents or is closely allied to their area of interest.
