In this module students will read (in the original Latin) selected passages from Bellum Catilinae, Sallust’s account of the famous Catilinarian conspiracy of 63BC. Students will be invited to assess the literary qualities of the work and to evaluate it as a historical source against the backdrop of Late Roman Republican culture. Study of Sallust’s rhetorical style and use of language will provide opportunities for widening and reinforcing skills in translating Latin.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this course students will be able to:
- translate selected passages from Sallust's Bellum Catilinae, thereby demonstrating a strong knowledge of Latin grammar, syntax and vocabulary
- analyse the work in the context of the Late Roman Republic
- evaluate the literary qualities of Bellum Catilinae and its influence on later Roman historians.
