LANG40700 TESOL Pedagogy and Practice

Building on the foundations laid in the Introduction to TESOL Pedagogy module, this module is designed to deepen students' understanding of research-informed methods and approaches that are essential for effective TESOL practice.

Students are introduced to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), and investigate communicative and task-based teaching approaches. They explore the processes involved in the development of second language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing) based on current second language acquisition research, and examine and practise a range of teaching approaches that can support the development of these skills in the TESOL classroom.

Through a combination of theoretical study and practical application, students develop the knowledge and skills necessary to create effective, research-based language learning environments.

Learning Outcomes:


Upon completion of the module, students will be able to:

- Demonstrate an understanding of action-orientated, task-based, and communicative approaches to language learning and teaching.
- Analyse the processes involved in second language listening, speaking, reading and writing and their classroom-based implications.
- Demonstrate a theoretical and practical understanding of research-informed approaches and methodologies that can be used to support the development of second language skills.
- Design a CEFR-based lesson for a specific group of learners (identify learning outcomes, design classroom tasks, select materials, and suggest appropriate teaching and learning approaches).

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
The module is delivered through a combination of lectures and workshops. Input will be provided through a lecture, facilitating students’ active participation in the workshops. Students will participate in pre-workshop groups and meet (without their Lecturer) to complete tasks in preparation for the workshop. Students will engage in reflective activities that will contribute to developing their understanding of teaching and learning a second/foreign language.
