This module aims to provide practitioners with a comprehensive introduction to the methodologies and strategies involved in carrying out a piece of research in the area of TESOL. Topics covered will include: an introduction to the major paradigms and debates in TESOL research; exploration of a number of research methods; issues related to quantitative and qualitative data; producing a research proposal.

Learning Outcomes:

Successful candidates will demonstrate an ability to:
analyse and evaluate the methodology underpinning a range of research projects
evaluate research designs in the area of TESOL
select appropriate research methods for their own project
develop a research question and design a data collection plan
plan a thesis proposal and carry out an extensive literature search
conduct research in the TESOL context (for example, action research or case study research)
