This module is designed for international students who have an intermediate level of English and wish to improve their English for personal and professional development in an academic environment. Students will improve their understanding of native speaker usage in an academic setting. The class will involve an introduction to independent reading skills and practice in listening to lectures and note taking. Students will have the opportunity to develop their oral proficiency through short presentations on academic topics and will focus on improving fluency and accuracy in writing in a formal academic style. Aspects of Irish academic culture will be introduced through written and spoken texts and classroom discussions. This module will be delivered via small group teaching with classes having a maximum of 18 students. Students will also have access to extra resources and materials via the Virtual Learning Environment, Brightspace.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

Students who achieve at least a B grade in this module should be able to:

• give a short presentation on an academic topic (spoken production)
• discuss a semi-specialist topic in a reasonably fluent manner (spoken interaction)
• understand the main points in a range of spoken texts (listening)
• recognise significant points in factual texts on semi-specialist topics (reading)
• write coherent texts in an academic style (writing)

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module involves an interactive small group class using pair work and task-based activities. Students prepare short academic presentations in their area of study and work on critical writing.
