Students will need a laptop and Wifi connection to participate fully in this module.
In this module the different genres of oral narrative will be described, and their traits discussed. An emphasis on Folktales and Oral Legends will be given. Irish examples of folk narrative will be analysed individually and on a regional basis, and then will be set within the framework of international folklore. Similarities and differences between oral and literary narrative will be illustrated, and the influences of folklore on the literature of Ireland will also be discussed.

Learning Outcomes:

- Have expanded their understanding of oral genres
- Have acquired a detailed knowledge of the standard reference works concerned with the cataloguing and analysis of oral narratives.
- Have enhanced their abilities in theoretical approaches to the subject such as psychoanalysis, functionalism, formalism, structuralism, and ethnographic.
-Have significantly increased their understanding of the Irish oral narrative and its principal features and with the narrative art in its wider European context.
-Have acquired a distinctive and valuable perspective on the significanct contribution of the archival holdings in the National Folklore Collection, UCD.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Teaching is carried out in lectures and in seminar-style participatory classes. Archival and primary sources are widely used in all modules, and students are also encouraged to make use of digital archive resources in their research and learning.
