The purpose of the thesis is to provide students with the competencies to undertake academic research. While all MSc Humanitarian Action students are required to complete a 10 ECTS module in Applied Research Design, the thesis component of the programme requires every student to develop a research issue for academic research and complete this research under the supervision of a qualified academic.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of the thesis, each student should have the competencies to:
Develop a research issue identifying the rationale for the research, the problem under investigation, and the research question;
Develop specific questions or objectives to realise the study question;
Construct a study framework that builds on relevant and contemporary literature;
Identify and justify appropriate research methods and tool - to be employed in an ethical manner that align with best social science research principles;
Demonstrate data management and analytical skills to realise the study's questions and/ or specific questions;
Demonstrate sound synthesis skills to show how the findings contribute to answer the study's question

Indicative Module Content:

The thesis will be graded under the following five criteria:
1. Knowledge of the subject/ issue
2. Quality of work: Level of difficulty/ Use of explanation and summarization/ Relevant and current literature/ Contribution to knowledge of the subject/ Extent of supervision required by the student
3. Analysis & synthesis: Development of argument/ Structure of argument /Imagination and logic in argument design
4. Evaluation/ Recommendations: Ability to prioritize issues/ Level of critical thinking/ Objectivity
5. Literary Style: Presentation/ Quality of writing

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
At the very outset it is emphasised that in a taught programme, the student is the main person driving the thesis process. A good tutor-student relationship is critical to realizing a good research product and all efforts should be made from both sides to grow and maintain this relationship. Wherever a student is working with more than one supervisor, all efforts must be made to keep both the supervisors informed about progress on the thesis.
