This module will train students to design and deliver a portfolio of outreach materials using a variety of media to facilitate greater awareness of the discipline of Classics at second- and third-level education. The materials will support our School’s “Access Classics” outreach project, in which we visit and host schools and adult education institutions in order to increase awareness of our subject within these schools. Students taking this module will acquire fundamental skills in outreach and use these skills to produce a portfolio of various outreach materials that may contribute to this and other outreach projects, including visits with schools. The best examples of student work may be published online if appropriate.

Learning Outcomes:

On this module students will acquire the following skills:

• a basic understanding of effective outreach that supports pedagogy
• the ability to use communication tools and techniques, such as poster design, blogging, vlogging, and podcasting
• the ability to use professional communication tools and technology to design and deliver a wide range of effective outreach materials to support the School’s “Access Classics” outreach programme

Indicative Module Content:

In the course of this module, students will learn some of the basics of effective outreach and public engagement and put this experience into practice in designing materials to support students and teachers, as well as other outreach resources (e.g. posters, podcasts, videos, trailers, etc). Students will be offered the opportunity to participate in outreach visits on campus or to a school.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
One third of the teaching hours will focus on the teaching of relevant skills, and two thirds of the class hours will be designated as studio time during which student may work individually or in groups on projects for their portfolio, under the guidance and supervision of an instructor.
