This module will introduce students to the physical principles behind, and the practical application of the seismic techniques commonly used to image the subsurface. The students will be introduced to the seismic refraction, reflection, and surface wave methods. Data acquisition and processing will be introduced, but a special attention will be given to the interpretation of seismic data with a focus on shallow geophysical applications. In addition, the students will be introduced to the basics of spectral analysis, required for a deeper understanding of geophysical data. They will gain an understanding of how to assess the information content and resolution of geophysical images/models as well as of the importance of underlying physical principles in Earth model building.
