From the Dublin Riots to the European and national elections, the world has witnessed the resurgence of several political movements marked by extremism, authoritarianism, and far-right worldviews. The result is a concerning global democratic backsliding. In this module, we critically analyze the multiple roots of this contemporary phenomenon and its disparate manifestations worldwide. At the theoretical level, we will explore a wide range of concepts such as populism, nationalism, polarization, far-right extremism, fascism, authoritarianism, conservatism, neoliberalism, and climate denialism. Students will be exposed to different styles of politicians and political movements, including cases in the United States, Europe (Ireland), Brazil, India, the Philippines, and more. We will look at forms of government, emotions, street protests, and online activism/harassment, giving particular attention to current attacks against environmentalism, women, queer people, migration, ethnic minorities, sexual rights, vaccinations, and freedom of speech. Throughout the semester, we will discuss alternatives to this wave of intolerance.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module will mainly assess students' engagement within the module. The students will have to write a short report summarizing their weekly readings. They will have to engage in the discussions and present the readings. The final assessment will be a portfolio that gathers all these smaller reports and wraps them in a broader argument/direction. Overall, the classes will be led by students, and the lecture will guide the discussions. The lecture will provide feedback, but peer review is also a structuring form of the module's feedback. This module deals with contemporary issues, which demand intensive debates, always conducted in a productive and friendly environment.
