GEOG20070 Urban Geography

Academic Year 2024/2025

This module develops some of the concepts introduced in GEOG10020 by concentrating on issues affecting the development of urban systems during the twentieth century, mainly in Europe, though not exclusively so. We will be concerned with planning issues, especially those in the alternative economic system of the Soviet Union and we will also examine urban social structures and deal with issues such as the regeneration / renewal of urban areas. Inevitably such discussions will lead to consideration of urban transportation, suburbanisation and retail provision. While the module will be concept-driven, we will also take the opportunity to develop your knowledge of real cities.
