There is an automatic exit at the completion of the Graduate Diploma stage. Entrance to the MSc (additional module) will be on a strictly competitive basis seeking to recruit 1 to a maximum of 2 graduates per academic year. Selection is open to all past graduates of the Higher/Graduate Diploma in Medicine (Risk Management). The MSc Module (Part-time over 2 trimesters): will consist of a major thesis of 15,000 words ONLY (as specified by supervisor and which specification must be strictly adhered to. Non-adherence will result in penalties which may affect grading) dealing with a specialist medico-legal/clinical risk management issue. It may be suggested that the student substantially expand the pilot project examined at Graduate Diploma level or initiate a completely new thesis subject matter. The thesis will generally attempt to consist of at least 2 distinct specialised parts (subject to necessary exception): (i) a medico-legal aspect and the (ii) clinical risk management/quality, patient safety aspects. Optionally, a number of specialists may be appointed as a general 'expert supervisory board' to ensure that the outcome results in a practical and professionally oriented thesis, which attempts to serve a health care market requirement and seeks to effect change and policy development. However, in normal circumstances, the MSc and thesis will entail: a written work, which will be assessed also by a viva - assessed by an external examiner (or an expert supervisory board usually consisting of a subject expert). The Viva panel will award a Grade to the student which is subject to the final overview of the Supervisor. The workload aspects consist of: 300h (Autumn) 300h (Spring). 4 TRIMESTERS consisting of 2 trimesters of the Graduate Diploma and 2 trimesters of the MSc module (for those exiting the Graduate Diploma and successfully entering the MSc Module) 2 TRIMESTERS consisting of the MSc module for other graduate diploma students.
