MODULE 2: Taught Course - involving 13-14 part-time (3.5 hours) (50 hours) teaching sessions relating to the medical speciality aspects of clinical risk management and quality assurance and accreditation (January to April) with a programme of attendance (part of continuous assessment as attendance is required to the specialist lectures), self directed learning; case-study based group sessions, medical specialist sessions, clinical risk management/patient safety specialist sessions, critical discussion events, workshops and other learning sessions. Assessment by 2 Components: (I) Oral exam/Interview in March/April and by (II) Written Exam in May.

Students must pass this module to be able to graduate from the Graduate Diploma.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

Cogently listen, interpret, discuss and debate, vocally and in writing and research issue/s in relation specifically to governance in healthcare, clinical risk management generally and in the medical specialisations. Ability to ensure effective communication skills in the medical workplace in general, as between the doctor and patient. To be able to use information technology and electronic sources of information in work, practice and presentation. Ability to learn to think in terms of `integrated governance' and practical solutions to problems in healthcare with may lead to harm to patients, by working with supervisor/s who are in the professional fields of law, medicine and governance. The attitude and approach to practical aspects of clinical risk managment will also be tested by an oral exam in March/April as part of this module.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module features lecturers, seminars, and workshops from eminent experts in the fields of high-risk specialisations in medicine, patient safety and clinical risk management. The students are offered face-to-face lecturers and interactive problem-based learning opportunities as a number of the sessions concentrate on the practical application of clinical risk and patient safety solutions. This allows students to engage in problem-based learning and also on self-reflection exercises as each of the sessions are in the duration of 3 hours over the term.

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

There are 2 components in this module: 1. An end of term assessment. In this respect, the students will only receive general feedback in relation to performance in the exam. However, where students wish to receive specific feedback, this will be available to students on request. 2. An interview assessment: the very specific nature of this assessment is for the purposes of allowing self-reflection. The external examiner to conduct the interview complete feedback forms. This feedback is transcribed and emailed individually to students to assist in their performance reviews.
