The module is delivered in a lecture-based format, covering a variety of topics relevant to the legal framework for the financing of aircraft. The core topics can be broadly broken down into the following areas: introduction to basic legal concepts; legal framework; leasing and trading aspects; financing structures; restructuring / default related elements; airline regulatory; and sanctions and compliance.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

The module aims to give students a strong grounding in the transactional side of leasing and trading aircraft and to provide an orientation around the legal framework involved, as well as an overview of related themes including insurance, compliance issues,, financing, bankruptcy and ESG matters.

Indicative Module Content:

The module will cover topics such as core legal concepts (including different legal systems, principles of company and trust law), Cape Town and GATS, regulatory issues (including sanctions), operating leases, sale/purchase agreements, financing, insolvency and restructuring and ESG.

The United Nations identified seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as core to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and UCD contributes in general to SDG 4 Quality Education. Further SDGs explored within this module if relevant are listed below. A scale of 1 - 5 indicates the extent to which the SDG is covered.

There will be feedback given both individually and to groups after the first assessment. This is unlikely to be provided prior to the second assignment due to the short lapse of time between the first two assignments, but will definitely be provided before submission of the final assignment.
