Climate Change is the single biggest challenge facing mankind and its impact will affect all sectors of society. Climate change is both and threat but also an opportunity. This module focuses on the important role Renewable Energy has in achieving Net Zero and in particular how the investment required to achieve Net Zero might be delivered. The course will be delivered through a combination of lectures, case studies, guest speakers, readings and class led discussion.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students will have an understanding of:
1. The world of Sustainable Investing and Sustainable Finance, with a particular focus on Green Finance.
2. The growth in ESG investing as well as the challenges facing investors seeking impact investment opportunities.
3. The role renewable will have in delivering Net-Zero including the paradigm shift that has taken place in the power sector and the new business opportunities that have arisen as a result of these changes.
4. The process of developing, financing, constructing and operating renewable energy assets.
5. The respective roles government and the private sector have in delivering net-zero.
6. The ability to review , assess and critically assess investment opportunities in the renewables space.
7. To be able to hold your own with Renewable Energy Finance Professionals in terms of having an understand of the Language, Structures (legal & Financial),Process, Risks, Key Commercial Contracts and Agreements, in this industry.

Indicative Module Content:

1. Look at Renewable Energy through the lens of Sustainability, beginning with the UN SDG's, Climate Change, Net Zero and drive for electrification.

2. Examine the evolution of the global Electricity System/Market, understanding the drivers of change and considering new business models that are evolving in this sector.

3. Consider Renewable Energy Finance in the context of Sustainable finance, including a review of the categories of Sustainable with a particular focus on Green bonds and project finance.

4. Examine the evolution of ESG, the challenges facing investors including Greenwashing and a look at some of the tools being used by governments and policy makers to bring transparency and governance to the sector.

5 .Deep dive into the development process for renewable energy projects; explaining structure , process risk identification and mitigation.

6. The role of Government & Private sector in achieving Net Zero, with a particular focus on Corporate PPAs,

7. Explore the role of financial modelling in project valuation and debt sculpting as well as the use of case studies to understand the process of project evaluation and investment decision making

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
The learning will be achieved through a combination of prescribed reading materials, Case Studies, podcasts, webinars and Lectures. Throughout the course learning will be supplemented and underpinned with presentations from Guest Speakers who are subject matter experts in their respective field.
