The course will introduce students to the principles of financial management in the context of biotech/biotherapeutic based businesses. It is essentially concerned with how corporations raise, manage and spend money and is designed to provide an essential understanding of financial decision-making within a corporation.

In the context of biotechnology / biotherapeutics, the module will build the theory of Real Options with a view to making strong connections between financial theory and the financing and valuation of technology based firms

Major course themes include investment appraisal, cost of capital, capital structure, financial options, real options and the market for corporate control.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should:
• Develop a strong understanding and appreciation of the fundamental economic and
financial theories underlying corporate finance

• Achieve a good practical understanding of three principal financial decisions that flow from
shareholder wealth maximization, namely (a) the financing decision, (b) the investment
decision, and (c) the dividend decision

• Develop strong analytical skills in the application of ‘options technology’ to investment
decision making.

• Review the Financial Performance of a Public Company in the Biotechnology / Biotherapeutics

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module will be taught face to face

Should Circumstances determine that face to face meetings are not possible then every effort will be made support teaching and learning in an on-line environment.

-We will also have a few Workshop Sessions to engage with Numerical Examples
-Students will be assigned to Groups early in the module to facilitate Group Work.
