Students will complete a work placement for a period of 6 to 8 weeks in a research group in UCD or suitable equivalent. During the placement students will be exposed to research relating to current environmental issues. During the placement one environmental issue pertinent to the research group will be studied in some depth. Once the placement is complete, the reviewed topic will be presented to an audience. During the placement reflective journals and research tasks will be completed.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

The students will gain research experience in a research group based at UCD or at a relevant alternative institute that conducts research relating to current environmental issues. During the placement the student will undertake various research related tasks that may include sampling, laboratory processing of samples that may include chemical analyses, species identification, inputting and managing data, data analyses and report preparation. The students will also present a review of their chosen topic and detail their experience during the placement to academic and also outside agency/industry partners. Reflective journals completed during placement provide an opportunity to identify further relevant skills that require development.

Indicative Module Content:

A 6 to 8 week placement will be completed with a research group in UCD or suitable alternative that conducts research relevant to the environmental sector. Activities completed will be relevant to the research group providing the placement. These could include marine and freshwater research, wildlife conservation, issues relating to invasive species and climate change.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Learning will take place during the placement in a research group and usually includes most of the following: active/task-based learning; peer and group work; reflective learning; enquiry & problem-based learning; student presentations, report writing.
