Curricular information is subject to change.

This module examines both methodological and theoretical issues around experimental designs and psycholinguistic second language acquisition research methods. Students will be introduced to the various stages of the research process from the development and justification of research questions and the formulation of an appropriate experimental research design, including methods of data-gathering and data analysis, to the final stage of writing up. Students will develop practical skills for using online and psycholinguistic methods in second language research and analyze data.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this course, you should be able to do the following:

- Identify and describe the major elements in conducting experimental research, including typical methods for data collection and analysis, and strengths and limitations.
- Design and evaluate research instruments commonly used by psycholinguistic research.
- Demonstrate a critical awareness and capacity to evaluate specific research methods of data collection and quantitative analysis used in bilingual and multilingual educational settings.
- Prepare a research plan to investigate a topic in bilingual education research.
- Demonstrate the ability to plan and prepare a research proposal outlining a specific research project to be undertaken in bilingual education research.

Indicative Module Content:

1-2Introduction to research methods
Introduces some key concepts and components of research including the need for a plan, reliability, validity and methodological triangulation
3-4Experimental designs
A detailed look at quantitative experimental designs in nature
5-6 Data collection procedures in psycholinguistic research
