Adopting a thematic approach, this course is designed to facilitate students in understanding key elements of the psychological development of children and young people. Theoretical perspectives on development will inform the analysis undertaken on this course. Psychological development occurs in context and consideration will be given to the possible impact of the family, the school, organisational systems and the community on the facilitation of the psychological development of children and young people. Furthermore, it is intended that an understanding of the practical applications of psychological theories and intervention strategies will be fostered with a view to enhancing the psychological development of children and young people.
Among the topics that may be considered in this module are Psychological Theories of Development, Family Dynamics and Psychological Development, The Pre-School Years and Play, The Development of Friendships, Bullying, Being a Teenager, Interpersonal Attraction and the Development of Intimate Relationships, Going to College or Work.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

After this course, students will be able to
(1) assess critically the contribution offered by each of the differing theoretical perspectives on the subjects under consideration;
(2) evaluate the practical applications (if any) that follow from the theoretical viewpoints;
(3) identify the major research findings in each of the areas studied;
(4) begin to identify possible strategies to foster the psychological development of children and young people through the application of psychological theories and intervention strategies.
