This module will build on the knowledge, skills and competences in English 1A and 1B, with particular reference to the English programmes in the Senior Cycle: TY; LCA; LCVP; and Leaving Certificate Established at all levels. The module will facilitate and promote the usage of active learning approaches and methodologies in each programme.
Participants will be enabled to develop further their understanding of learning difficulties in the English classroom and their ability to support pupils effectively. Strategies to provide creative challenge for gifted pupils will also be discussed. The teaching of English in a multicultural and multilingual classroom will be addressed.
Participants will be expected to read widely on methodologies of English and to reflect on and evaluate their own practice honestly and with rigour. They will be introduced to an Action Research methodology and other research frameworks and will be supported if they choose to carry out their research assignment in this subject.
The module will be delivered through a combination of lectures and workshops. PME students will be assessed across a variety of formats, including assignments and projects.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, students should:

• Be familiar with the requirements of second level English syllabi for Irish Post-Primary schools, with particular focus on the programmes for Senior Cycle.
• Be able to demonstrate short and long-term planning ability, with particular reference to the Senior Cycle.
• Be familiar with the principles of programme design and be able to structure, implement and evaluate an engaging Transition Year module that will make a significant contribution to pupil development in this subject.
• Have developed a wide range of teaching strategies and methodologies to provide effective support and creative challenge for pupils with additional learning needs, for those who are gifted, and for EAL learners in the mixed-ability English classroom.
• Have developed a sophisticated understanding of the role of language and literature in empowering young people to negotiate their world and be able to impart to pupils a curiosity and a passion for both.
