This module engages students in exploring, analysing and applying advanced theoretical and conceptual knowledge of the main foundation disciplines of Psychology, Sociology and Philosophy with specific reference to the inclusive education of pupils with disabilities/additional needs and ethical professional practice. It also introduces students to relevant legislation, as it applies to working with, and supporting, these pupils. Irish education policy and practice in relation to pupils with additional needs will be contextualised within, and compared with, best international practice.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

1. Demonstrate advanced theoretical and conceptual knowledge of the main foundation disciplines of Psychology, Sociology and Philosophy, as they underpin and inform the education of pupils with disabilities/additional educational needs.
2. Critique models of educational provision for pupils with disabilities/additional needs with reference to best international practice.
3. Demonstrate awareness of the professional, ethical and legal issues in relation to additional needs education
4. Demonstrate the capacity to reflect on their practice within their school communities.
