Counselling is a core component of this module and, within this component, Solution-focused Brief Therapy, critical incident management, parent-professional relationships and child protection initiatives are all explored. Mental health and how to develop resilience is examined within the context of social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. Therapeutic approaches including speech and language therapy and occupational therapy examine the aetiology and characteristics of various disabilities as well as relevant resources and intervention programmes. Students are introduced to a range of communicative and assistive technologies as effective educational resources for pupils with severe communication and/or physical difficulties. Lectures are complemented by site visits to specialist school settings.
