A minor thesis of 18,000-20,000 words on a topic of education relevance, completed in partial fulfilment of the requirements for award of a Masters in Education Degree, a Masters in Additional Educational Needs Degree, or a Master of Arts in Education Degree. Students complete a thesis proposal, outlining their chosen research area. This is reviewed by the Course Director and relevant academic staff. Each student is assigned appropriate supervision and completes the specified research. The completed thesis is submitted for examination and in some cases further review by external examination.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

Students will complete a thesis appropriate to the level required for the award of a Masters degree. This thesis should demonstrate: a systematic understanding of knowledge in the chosen research field; a clear rationale for the research objectives and design; the use of a range of standard and/or more specialised research tools and/or techniques of enquiry; compliance with recommended ethical guidelines; the capacity to select from, scrutinise, reflect upon and critically evaluate data in the context of the research objectives; the ability to arrive at clear conclusions that communicate the outcomes and implications of the research.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This is a module centred on minor thesis activity. The approach taken to teaching and learning is guided by UCD Regulations and School of Education Practice regarding content, supervision procedure; and grading.

Requirements, Exclusions and Recommendations
Learning Requirements:

Completion of undergraduate degree; completion of taught modules where relevant; training in academic writing, research design and qualitative and quantitative research methods.
