This course introduced students to the field of Development Economics. The object of the course is to equip students with a greater understanding of the process of economic development and the challenges faced by nations and individuals to transit out of poverty. The course covers a range of economic problems in developing countries and discusses - both from a theoretical and an empirical perspective - possible strategies to overcome these problems. Topics include measurement and theories of economic growth, inequality, and poverty reduction; nutrition and poverty traps; markets for land, credit, and insurance; agricultural transformation; and evaluation of development programs.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to (i) identify and understand key aspects of the process of economic development and economic challenges of developing countries, (ii) apply economic analysis to these problems to formulate and evaluate possible policy responses, and (iii) draw independent conclusions when being confronted with arguments for and against current policy issues and their sometimes ambiguous evidence - ultimately to play an informed role in the struggle for economic development and poverty alleviation

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:

Lectures will include elements of tutorials and applications to real-world data using statistical software.
Sample exercises for each topic will allow students to self-assess their knowledge and study in groups.
