CVEN40050 Design of Structures 3

Academic Year 2024/2025

This module provides an overview of the structural design process and the concepts of reliability, stability and robustness and is based on Eurocode. It covers sustainability in structural design, the detailed design of reinforced concrete beams for flexure, shear, and torsion, design of slender reinforced concrete columns, design of suspended floors, including ribbed and flat slabs, design of water retaining structures and associated calculation of crack width, as well as strut and tie modelling. The module also covers the design of steel single and multi-storey buildings, design to satisfy lateral stability, and the concepts of plastic analysis and design. The design of steel/concrete composite construction is also covered.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of the course students should be able to: Apply structural mechanics to evaluate the forces in structural elements. Understand the responsibility of the engineer with respect to design of safe structures and components. Understand structural stability, frame action and design of shear walls. Prepare design calculations for structural elements. Have an understanding of lower bound theorems of collapse.
