Through interactive engagement with a local authority arts office, this module introduces students to the importance of the local and situated practices of policymaking and points to how policy is something that is made, negotiated, and debated. Students work in teams to research, develop, write and propose a policy briefing in response to a ‘live’ topic of interest provided by a local authority arts office. This is a project-based module with a great deal of self-directed work, supported by guidance from the module coordinator and guest tutors.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This is a project based module made up of a series of labs. These labs will consist of a mixture of self-directed and interactive group learning led by some initial lecture material or activities by the module coordinator and occasional guest tutors as well as opportunity to work towards the development of the policy brief. Students will be expected to prepare in advance and for sessions based on independent study activities. Students will be supported to engage in group work and to value and bring their own perspective to class and group discussions and informal presentations. Use of AI is permitted for idea generation and brainstorming, initial essay structure, and organisation of referencing. Use of AI in these instances must be pre-approved by the module coordinator and referenced. Please consult the module Brightspace page for further information.
