This module supports students in the design and completion of an independent professional project that addresses a significant practical cybersecurity problem faced in industry.
Students will be supervised in the preparation of a project report by a member of the School of Computer Science and a practitioner from industry. The module will include guidance on developing a feasible research question, identifying an appropriate research methodology, collecting and analysing empirical data, and writing a project report. Student contact hours will include regular individual supervision.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students will be able to:
* Demonstrate a critical understanding of the chosen practical problem and the literature around the problem domain;
* Formulate a clear research question and design an appropriate methodology;
* Implement a software prototype to collect relevant data and evaluate effectiveness of the proposed solution to the chosen problem;
* Collate and analyse empirical data;
* Write a report describing the practical problem tackled, the relevant research literature, the solution proposed and the results obtained;
* Critically evaluate effectiveness of the proposed solution in a practical setting.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
In this module, students can develop their research knowledge and skills by conducting an independent professional project on a topic of practical relevance in cybersecurity.
Students will be assigned two supervisors, an academic and a practitioner, who will provide individualised support throughout their project. Tailored project design and delivery training will be provided during regular supervisory meetings. This is complemented by class workshops on various topics, including research methodologies and report writing.

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Students will receive regular verbal feedback during supervisory meetings and can expect feedback from their supervisor on one draft of their project report, provided they supply it in a timely manner.
