Collection, organisation and storage of data are major tasks in many human activities and in every modern computing system. Computer-based information systems ensure that these data are permanently maintained, quickly updated and made accessible to users. Databases are essential components of computerised information systems. This is a module for MSc. Computer Science (Conversion) and Higher Diploma in Computer Science students covering how to design, develop and query relational databases. In this module, students will learn the fundamentals of database models, database designing methodologies, database querying. They will learn details about the relational database model, relational database query languages (relational algebra, SQL), the entity-relationship model for database design. From a more practical point of view they will gain experience in building a relational database using a commercial database management systems. Students will find these skills very useful in the development of any application requiring the storage and manipulation of data.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

1. Analyse the goals, functions, models, and components of database systems.
2. Explain the context, phases, and techniques for designing and building databases.
3. Select and apply appropriate design models to a given development environment.
4. Design an efficient database system using an appropriate database design technique.
5. Implement and manipulate a relational database using SQL.
