Curricular information is subject to change.

The aims of the dissertation are to put into practice theories and concepts learned from the programme and to provide an opportunity to study a particular topic in depth. The dissertation must demonstrate evidence of data-driven, independent investigation. It will allow the prospective student to address questions raised during the teaching portion of the programme by applying the appropriate data gathering and analysis techniques. It will also demonstrate the ability to deliver project results within a strict timeframe.

Students can choose a dissertation topic by identifying one or more particular issues raised in teaching Chinese language and culture to school pupils. The issues may be raised from teaching Mandarin in an English-speaking language environment and/or to a particular group of students, such as teaching Chinese pronunciation, grammar, characters, words or sentence structure. The issues may also be raised from teaching Chinese culture, which requires an in-depth understanding of the culture as well appropriate strategies, approaches and methodologies (word limit: 10,000-12,000).
