This module will equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to conduct research in the field of applied linguistics, specifically concerning teaching and learning Chinese as a foreign language. It will also allow students to refine these research skills through advancing their critical thinking. The overall aim of the module is to prepare students to undertake their dissertation (CHN40020) in the summer trimester.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module, students will:
• Demonstrate advanced knowledge and understanding of conducting research in the field of applied linguistics, specifically concerning teaching and learning Chinese as a foreign language.
• Understand how to implement appropriate research design.
• Have a thorough and sound understanding of research ethics in general, and specifically, the ethical approval process in UCD.
• Demonstrate critical thinking skills in analysing previous research in the field of teaching and learning Chinese as a foreign language.
• Complete a proposal for their dissertation (including ethical approval forms) that will be completed over the summer trimester (CHN40020).
• Demonstrate ability to write in an academic style and think critically through compiling a literature review (2,500 words).

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Students will attend a two-hour lecture each week whereby group work and in-class discussions will also feature. Students will be expected to complete weekly reading tasks that will form part of these discussions.
