This module is dedicated to putting into pedagogical practice the knowledge acquired in the modules CHN40150 and CHN40160. Teaching Practice uses metalinguistic knowledge of the modern Chinese language along with basics in CFL to provide students with strategies to address L2 learners’ most common challenges in acquiring Chinese while incorporating culture elements. This module aims at providing students with opportunities to teach Chinese in a real classroom, with guidance and feedback from tutors and mentor teachers.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this module, students should:

1. Complete a full four-phase progressive cycle from observation to teaching demonstration.
2. Establish teaching philosophies of their own.
3. Be able to design inclusive teaching plans that assist students from different levels and background to work towards desired learning outcomes.
4. Be able to understand key concepts and theoretical framework and how this knowledge is implied in different teaching contexts.
5. Be able to critically reflect and provide feedback to observations of teaching activities conducted by others and themselves.
6. Build a clear understanding of the identity as a teacher of Chinese language and culture and understand how a teacher's knowledge influences students’ learning outcomes.
7. Build a cultural awareness and have it embedded in their knowledge base.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Students will be provided with an observation schedule by the commence date of Spring trimester. The schedule will be overseen by the programme director, module coordinator of CHN40170, and the IICS programme office.

MA TCLC students are expected to engage in observation during the first four weeks of their field activities, making detailed notes on these observations. Ideally, this observation period should include a broad experience of a wide range of classes. After four weeks, it is expected that they will team teach with their respective cooperating teacher. After 8 weeks, it is expected that they will be able to teach on their own (with the continued professional support from their cooperating teacher).

All students are required to attend in-person lectures and seminars at UCD in week 1, 2, 4, 6 and 12.
