This module offers an in-depth exploration of the theories, methodologies, and practical approaches to teaching Chinese language and culture. It is designed for MA students specialising in language education, Chinese studies, or related fields. The module aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to design, implement, and evaluate effective Chinese language and culture teaching programmes. Through a blend of theoretical insights and practical applications, students will learn to create engaging and culturally responsive teaching materials and curricula, fostering both language proficiency and intercultural competence.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this module, students will be able to:
1. Critically analyse major theories of second language acquisition (SLA) with a focus on Chinese as a second language.
2. Apply SLA theories to the development of Chinese language teaching methodologies.
3. Design culturally responsive Chinese language teaching materials and curricula.
4. Evaluate the effectiveness of various teaching strategies and materials in promoting Chinese language acquisition.
5. Demonstrate an understanding of the interrelationship between Chinese language and culture in educational contexts.
6. Conduct independent research on issues related to teaching Chinese language and culture.

Indicative Module Content:

The module is divided into five major units:

1. Theories of L2 Chinese Language Acquisition:
• Overview of key SLA theories.
• Specific challenges in acquiring Chinese as a second language.
• Cognitive, social, and affective factors in Chinese language learning.

2. Methodologies in Teaching Chinese Language:
• Teaching pronunciation and characters.
• Building vocabulary and improving reading.
• Teaching reading, writing, speaking, listening and translation.

3. Teaching material review and designing assessments:
• How to review and select engaging and effective teaching materials.
• How to design formative and summative assessments.

4. Experience sharing in teaching Chinese language and culture in an actual class and classroom management.

5. Cultural Competence in Language Teaching
• Understanding Chinese cultural norms, values, and traditions
• Integrating culture into language teaching.
• Comparative cultural studies.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
The module combines lectures with class discussions of assigned readings and students' presentation of their individual research project. Active participation is essential to this module.
