Curricular information is subject to change.

This module will provide techniques and strategies of relevance to students preparing for a research project. One of the primary outcomes of this module is the completion of a Literature Review in a specified research topic that will form the basis of the Research Project in Trimester 3.

The follow topic areas will be addressed

1. Principles of critical review of prior research, including information mining using resources available at UCD (hard-copy, as well as electronic resources), as well as other sources;
2. Statistical Analysis and Design of Experiments;
3. Best practices in written presentations.
4. Best practices in oral presentations.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Complete an in-depth critical analysis (written) of an original primary research paper involving an advanced topic of research;
2. Gather and assess information from a broad range of sources relating to a specific field of research;
3. Develop a strategy for the investigation and solution of an open-ended project relating to their selected field of research;
4. Communicate the results of a full literature review in an efficient and concise manner.

Indicative Module Content:

- skills for conducting detailed literature review/information mining
- critical evaluation of research

Feedback Strategy/Strategies

• Feedback individually to students, post-assessment
• Online automated feedback
• Peer review activities

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

- Online automated feedback will be received on completion of the Brightspace Research Integrity module. - Students will peer-review exemplars of other students' research proposals and provide written feed-back. The peer-review will take place before the final submission of the research proposal and students have the opportunity to take peer-feedback into account for their final submission. - individual feedback will be provided on the research proposal and literature review post-assessment through written/annotated feedback and rubrics through the VLE.
