Academic Year 2024/2025
Gene therapies have the potential to treat and even cure disease ranging from blood disorders to ophthalmic diseases and cancer. The objective of this module is to provide students with an understanding of the concepts and technologies underpinning the production of gene therapies and modern vaccines. This module will cover both viral and non-viral gene therapy and vaccine manufacturing approaches. Viral vectors including Adeno-associated virus, adenovirus and lentivirus will be addressed, with a focus on the main production platforms currently used, strategies for vector purification and subsequent analytical techniques for quality, purity and efficacy. The production of non-viral gene therapies (mRNA, RNAi, tRNA, circRNA), novel vaccines (nucleic acid, AAV, Ad) and the associated delivery technologies will also be addressed.
