The aim of this module is to provide students with the opportunity to gain advanced Chemical/Chemical & Bioprocess Engineering work experience, in a structured setting, for a per toiod of 3-4 months, typically, beginning in May. In conjunction with CHEN40750 (CBE Work Placement II), these modules reflect the core learning experience obtained by the student during their second major work placement period. This module is expected involve work, on a full-time basis, outside UCD. Attendance requirements are agreed in consultation with the student, Academic Supervisor and Sponsor and may, in certain cases, exceed the minimum requirements of the module descriptor.

Points of note:

- Students must complete a Competence & Commitment Report (max 2500 words), based on their accumulated placement experiences.
- Students must prepare a 15-minute (voice-over) presentation on their experience; the presentation much be included as an appendix to the report.
- All aspects of the placement will be managed in accordance with the UCD Academic Policy document 'Internship/Work Practice Experience: Guidelines and Good Practice', approved 12 April 2007. V.1.5. (Last updated: 1 May 2014).

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this modules, the student should be able to:

- Apply, to practical situations, chemical/bioprocess and general engineering knowledge.

- Identify and handle the wider implications of his/her work as an engineer, including health, hazard and safety aspects, sustainability aspects, commerical and economic aspects.

- Show evidence of interpersonal, leadership and communication skills, including the ability to manage interpersonal relationships; demonstration of leadership in a professional role; communicate ideas and plans by report-writing and oral presentation.

- Demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to high standards of professional and ethical conduct.

- Describe the benefits of continuing professional development (CPD) and develop a personal CPD plan.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This module is primarily self-directed within the context of an industrial placement. Students are normally appointed to a nominated academic and industrial supervisor who provide feedback and guidance throughout the module period.

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Students are advised to keep academic supervisor updated regarding their progress and work and in this way the academic supervisor can provide valuable feedback regarding progress and appropriate advice for student advancement. This also holds for the industrial supervisor, although on a less formal basis.
