Letter grades

Curricular information is subject to change.

This module will introduce students to the concept and practice of independent research in specialised topics in chemical engineering. The students will complete an in-depth study of a specified chemical engineering topic. They will be exprected to enhance chemical engineering and allied knowledge and understanding, analytical abilities, problem solving methodologies in the chosen area of research, and further develop critical, technical reporting, project management and communication skills.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students should be able:
To use conventional and electronic information systems to locate, select and critically appraise literature from a variety of sources and formulate a critical technical literature review.
To develop a research plan and experimental design to achieve key research objectives in the specified time using available resources.
To identify and analyse hazards and safety issues associated with the proposed research activity, develop a system of work to reduce associated risks to an acceptable level; prepare a Risk Assessment document according to HSA guidelines.
To identify and assess, where applicable, ethical issues associated with the proposed research activity and re-develop the research plan accordingly.
To design and validate, where applicable, an experimental apparatus to achieve the key research objective.
To collect and/or generate, collate and critically analyse data; interpret and verify the results obtained.
To communicate and defend concepts and principles of a technical nature to specialist and non-specialist audiences in both written form and through oral presentation.
To work and communicate effectively with peers, technical staff, post-graduate students and external agencies (e.g. suppliers, industrial co-supervisors and associated staff)
