Curricular information is subject to change
On completion of this module, students are expected to:
1) know specifics of main group organometallic chemistry, 2) show knowledge of synthesis, structure and reactivity of transition metal carbonyl compounds, 3) describe syntheses and structures of transition metal halides and hydrides and show understanding chemical reactions that can be employed for converting them into organometallic complexes, 4) outline catalytic processes that involve transition metal hydride and alkyl compounds. 5) Rationalise the chemistry of transition metal carbene complexes.
Main group transition metal compounds with focus on lithium, magnesium and aluminium including there synthesis, structural characteristics and their chemistry.
Transition metal alkyl compounds and their synthesis from transition metal halides and hydrides, the Schwarz's reagent and its reactions with olefins, Ti-based transition metal complexes including the Tebbe reagent and its chemistry, comparison with the Petasis reagent. Synthesis and reactivity of sandwich-type metallocenes, mono-, di- and polynuclear transition metal carbonyl compounds, the Wilkinson catalyst and the catalytic cycle for olefin hydrogenation.

• Group/class feedback, post-assessment
Student will be given the correct answers to continuous assessment exercises subsequent to these assessments and an overview on typical mistakes made. Students will be individually informed about the grades they receive for the quality of their samples synthesised in the practical/laboratory classes.
