You will identify, with the assistance of the module coordinator, a topic for a major project to be conducted under the supervision of a member of staff of UCD School of Biosystems and Food Engineering or another expert identified as most appropriate.

The industry project is the opportunity to put expertise in (a) life cycle assessment [ISO14044] (b) carbon footprinting [ISO14067] or (c) GHG inventory assessment [ISO14064] into practice, by using the selected method to assess a product, service or company currently available in the Irish market.

You will need to choose: (1) a product, service or company for which you can access information and data and (2) the most appropriate ISO standard to work with. Where possible you should work with a current or prospective employer to make this selection.

The project will require you to follow the relevant ISO standard to (1) implement the method, (2) collect and analyze data (3) write an ISO standard report, and (4) write a critical analysis of the process of completing the study. You will also need to attend to time management; literature review; appropriate statistical analysis; report writing.

It is envisaged that you will meet with your project supervisor regularly through the trimester and you will meet regularly with an industry stakeholder if at all possible. Meetings can be online or face-to-face, as appropriate.

- Implement an assessment of a product, service, or company following the correct ISO standard
- Collect, calculate and analyze data for the inventory stage of the project
- Interpret the results in a meaningful manner
- Write an industry-standard report of the selected product, service or company
- Critically analyse a project to determine its strengths, weaknesses and opportunity for future improvement.

Indicative Module Content:

There are no formal lectures or tutorials. Each student will meet with either the module co-ordinator or an assigned supervisor to complete the following:
(1) project selection (ISO standard to be used and product, service or company to study)
(2) Review of background information
(3) Goal and scope definition
(4) Data collection
(5) Data analysis
(6) Interpretation
(7) Writing
(8) Critical anlaysis

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This is an industry practice-based project. Where possible a commissioning stakeholder will be identified and the report will be written to the standard they would expect to be happy to pay for.
One-to-one engagement with a supervisor will provide hands-on guidance through the process.
