This module provides an understanding of the management consulting profession and the strategic landscape of the consulting industry. Students wil learn about the consultancy process from relationship building and opportunity identification through to implementation and review. This includes the development of key consultancy skills, including report writing negotiation, communication and presentation skills.

Students will also become familiar with the tools and techniques used iby successful consultants. To practice these skills, students work in groups to compelete a short 2-week consulting project for an Irish SME during a series of Company Clinics.

This course includes both group and individual assessment components. For group assignments, students will be assessed on both their group work and their individual contribution to the group project.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the module, students should:- have the basic competencies and skills that would be expected of a Management Consultant- understand the role of management consultants in both private and public sector organisations- appreciate how the role of a Management Consultant is evolving, both nationally and internationally, and how consultancy companies are adapting to these new market forces-be able to discuss the commercial aspects of managing a professional services firm including profitability, leverage and client satisfaction-understand the basic tools that support consultants in structuring and communicating their thoughts in addressing client needs and problems.

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

Students will be given feedback on individual assignments online via Brightspace. Groups will receive feedback on their Company Clinic presentations on the day that they are delivered. Other high-level feedback will be given in class. Students will complete a Self-Assessment tool in relation to their Class Participation grade.
