Diagnostic Techniques in Consulting focuses on the nature of the consulting process from a practical perspective, providing students with the opportunity to learn about the realities of the management consulting process at first hand. In particular, the course will examine and assess the role of the individual management consultant, the consulting team, and the specific tools and techniques used during a consulting assignment in order to ensure the delivery of a successful project outcome. A key element of the course is the completion of a group consultancy assignment for a client company.

This is a project-based course with a considerable amount of group work. All students will be assessed on both their group work and their individual contribution to the client project.

Learning Outcomes:

This course is designed to enable participants to:
1. Obtain practical experience in managing a consulting assignment, and the consulting process, for a client company
2. Evaluate and apply appropriate research and investigative techniques
3. Develop skillls to acquire, undertake and complete management consulting projects
4. Master key interpersonal skills, such leading project teams, presenting to clients and managing client relationships
5. Improve time and project management skills through practical project work.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
This course will examine and develop the role of the individual management consultant, the consulting team and the specific techniques used in a consultancy project to ensure the delivery of a successful project outcome.

For the duration of the course, students undertake a live consulting project for a client company. Hence this module will focus on experiential teaching and learning methods, or 'learning by doing'.

This is a project-based course with a considerable amount of group work. All students will be assessed on both their group work and their individual contribution to the client project, based on class participation and peer feedback.

The course will be taught through a series of weekly classes / workshops and guest speaker presentations. The group projects will be scheduled for review, assessment and discussion at key milestones throughout the course.

Classes are modelled after workshops, with a great deal of group participation and discussion. All teams will make in-class presentations during the module.

How will my Feedback be Delivered?

1. Teams will be given feedback on their presentations immediately following the presentation delivery. This includes the 2 status report presentations, plus the final client presentation. 2. Teams will be given ongoing feedback and guidance during weekly classes, when a portion of class time will be allocated to discussions with the module coordinator on project progress or any other concerns / queries. 3. Teams will complete a Peer Evaluation at the end of the semester, when they can give feedback on the contribution of their teammates.
