Family businesses represent between 75% and 90% of all firms in Western economies. While these organizations face many comparable challenges as nonfamily firms, family firms are challenged by the overlap of business and family spheres. It is this overlap that makes family firms unique and biases their behavior. The goal of this class is to better understand the family business phenomenon, a largely under-researched form of organizing.
This module will explore the unique challenges and opportunities facing individuals and families involved in family business. Key business, personal and interpersonal issues relevant to the continuity and management of these firms will be examined. The module will discuss the processes and issues involved in creating new business opportunities for family owned firms. An atmosphere conducive to encouraging interactive creativity will permeate the module and a variety of techniques, tools and exercises will be employed to enhance your idea generating abilities.

• To build knowledge of the managerial and governance practices that can help improve the effectiveness and longevity of family firms.
