This module provides students with a strong foundation in understanding the complexity of the business environment and will assist students in developing their ability to apply their knowledge of the course to practical work-based situations requiring business analysis. Among the areas covered are: The Political Environment, the Economic Environment and Structure, the Social & Demographic Environment, the Technological Environment, the International Business Environment, The Enterprise Sector, Ethics and Business, Industrial Policy, the Role of Manufacturing and Services, Indigenous Industry in Ireland, High Tech Sectors, Foreign Direct Investment and the Future of Business.

The primary aim of this module is to provide students with an understanding of how the external environment impacts on businesses. This is an introductory course, with the purpose of providing students with a general appreciation of relevant subject matter. The Business Environment module builds on the Principles of Management module and provides foundations to BMGT1009D Business Project module in which learners will apply acquired skills and techniques.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module you should be able to: Identify the critical role of business environment analysis and understand the implications of environmental analysis and research for management practice. Describe the key environmental factors that stimulate changes within the business environment. Review business environmental trends on international and sectoral levels in the Irish business environment. Understand the key principles of ethics and corporate social responsibility in business. Appreciate the importance and key factors in entrepreneurship. Analyse the evolution of Industrial Policy as adopted by the development agencies in Ireland. Understand the interaction between external business environment and internal business processes. Source and analyse secondary sources of information relating to the business environment.

Approaches to Teaching and Learning:
Students will attend classes for this module and have the opportunity to engage in active learning during these sessions. There will be in-class discussion and group work to analyse module concepts. Where appropriate, the module will incorporate case based learning
