Plants are essential for all other life on earth. Understanding the unique processes of plant biology provides us with important tools to successfully manage plants' growth and development to utilize them to feed the world’s population. Further, understanding the way plants cope with pathogens, environmental stress or climate change is an essential component to increase crop production and food security. The module aims to connect basic plant research with applications in agriculture and breeding.
The module will give an introduction into the fundamentals of plant biology including development, tissue and organ structure, cell biology and sexual reproduction. Further, it will be discussed how crops can be altered by traditional breeding approaches and genetic tools. The module will also provide an introduction to plant diseases; the biology, symptoms and signs, diagnosis and management of different plant pathogens.

About this Module

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module, students will have a fundamental knowledge of plant biology and plant pathology. Students should be able to demonstrate knowledge of
1) fundamentals of plant development, anatomy, cell biology and physiology
2) how breeding and laboratory-based genetic modification is achieved
3) the application of plant biology to solving problems associated with disease management

Additionally, students will have a thorough appreciation of the range of techniques used in plant biology and conducting literature research and review.
