Academic Year 2024/2025
‘[f]or the archaeologist and the native dweller, the landscape tells – or rather is – a story’ (Ingold 1993)

What is an archaeological landscape? How do we define landscape? How do we engage with landscapes? This module will, through a series of alternating expert-led group discussions and fieldtrips, explore concepts of landscape. Introductory sessions will discuss some of the methods (e.g. aerial photography; lidar; geophysical survey) and theoretical approaches used in landscape archaeology. This will be followed by alternating field and classroom sessions in which students will be encouraged to read and interpret the story that landscapes tell.
